Beware the adwords cowboys
August 27th, 2009
In addition to the SEO link building scam there is the Adwords scam. I have no problem in calling it a scam because that’s what it is. They are taking money on false pretences and delivering a wholly unsuitable product. Adwords is free. If you follow the many tutorials and articles you can set up a successful adwords campaign for nothing and turn a profit on day one.
Unfortunately there a number of companies whose high pressure marketing convince the unwary that they need to spend a lot of money running an adwords campaign. The trouble is it’s a based on a pack of lies.
How to avoid the SEO link building scam
August 23rd, 2009
Link building isn’t easy. It takes time and effort to research and create the links that will make a difference to your ranking. And it’s not the number of links that matter, it’s the quality of those links. Much better to have one link from a respected site than 1000 inbounds from spammy free-for-all directories.
There are however any number of companies who do sell link building services. Some are very good but most are a waste of time. What’s worse is the way they market their services, fail to deliver and scam you out of a wodge of cash.

Page titles should be long enough but not too long
January 29th, 2009
There has been some debate over the length of page titles. The predominant search engine, Google, displays 60 characters but what happens if you go over the limit?
To test the theory I added some made up words to my contact page: www.aerin.co.uk/contact.htm. The words are: skriqgy, korziklr and qasdcvgyuh. Google has indexed the page and if you search for them they will show up in the results page. So far so good, but what does it prove?

For ages and ages google advised that you should submit your site to DMOZ, yahoo and industry related directories. This guidance has gone from the google webmaster pages. So all of you that spent hours and hours seeking out directories as part of your link building strategy were wasting your time.

Why don’t people click on your links?
May 19th, 2008
There are certain topics and concepts that keep cropping up during discussions about search engine optimisation (SEO). One of these is the use of metatags. Let’s get one thing clear, there is no SEO advantage in the use of metatags – the search engines may index their contents but they won’t help to improve your ranking. So why bother? The answer is simple, to increase the number of visitor to your website. Let me explain. (more…)
How to increase visitors without using keywords
May 7th, 2008
Without really trying I have managed to achieve a very good ranking for the keywords ‘website navigation guidelines’ and it’s variants. I was quite pleased with my achievement until I carried out some analysis on the site. Despite the great ranking, most of the traffic arrives via a strange mix of search terms. Which has led me to out of my keyword comfort zone and into the unknown world of user behaviour. (more…)
Do you really understand the terminology?
April 22nd, 2008
An question was asked recently on the Cre8asite forum about some of the Acronyms used relation to search engines. It made me think again about the terminology I use daily and realize that not everybody speaks the same language when it comes to the subject of SEO.
Anyway, have a look at the thread to see what others consider to be the essential terms. One of the links posted was to the excellent glossary written by Aaron Wall at SEO Book. I’ve bookmarked the link and shall refer to it more often I’m sure.
PS, if you don’t already subscribe to Cre8asite I suggest you join sharpish, it is a goldmine of information.
